Rifampicin is active against gram-positive bacteria but less active against gram-negative bac-teria. It interferes with the synthesis of nucleic acids by inhibiting DNA dependent RNA polymerase. Resistance to rifampicin can develop rapidly. The degree of resistance varies depending on the site of mutation in the RNA polymerase.
